How is Rhinoplasty Performed? - Eugene Kim, MD Plastic Surgery

Rhinoplasty is used to correct the dimensions and outer appearance of your nose. In some cases, rhinoplasty is used to address breathing issues caused by structural abnormalities as well.

There are two rhinoplasty techniques: open and closed. The technique you require will determine how your rhinoplasty is performed.

Closed Rhinoplasty

With the closed technique, your rhinoplasty surgeon will make incisions on the inside of your nostrils. Through these incisions, your surgeon will be able to gently reshape cartridge to bring your nose into better alignment with your other facial features.

Closed rhinoplasty can be used to address issues with all areas of your nose, but is best for minor corrections.

Open Rhinoplasty

With the open technique, your rhinoplasty surgeon will make incisions both inside and outside of your nostrils. The additional incision in between your nostrils allows your rhinoplasty surgeon greater access to reshaping cartridge, making this technique better suited to address more significant issues.

During open rhinoplasty, the skin of your nose is lifted, exposing the internal structure and providing more access for your surgeon. This technique will result in external scarring, but when cared for properly, most scars will become all but unnoticeable following your recovery period.

Talk to a Rhinoplasty Surgeon

The best way to determine what rhinoplasty technique is best for you is through a one-on-one consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon. During your consultation, your rhinoplasty surgeon will listen to your concerns, assess the structure of your nose, and begin to develop a customized treatment plan.

When performed by a skilled plastic surgeon, rhinoplasty can create balance between your facial features and help you feel more confident and comfortable with your appearance.
